What do you need to complete the online application? Here's a preview....
(f you are in college applying for the High School Camp Staff, apply the questions below to both high school and college involvement.)

  • EXTRA/CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:Please provide a detailed list of the activities that you participate in that are considered IN-SCHOOL activities (ex: NHS, Varsity Soccer, SADD, etc...)
  • OTHER ACTIVITIES: Please provide a detailed list of the activities that you participate in that are considered OUT-OF-SCHOOL activities (ex: Relay For Life, Community Action, Church Youth Group, etc...)
  • EXPERIENCE & LEADERSHIP TRAINING
List any workshops or leadership seminars you have attended that you feel will assist you in your role as a Junior Counselor at the MASC/MAHS Summer Workshop. (ex: MASC/MAHS Fall Training Institutes - 2004, 2005; Activities League Leadership Conference - 2004, Sportsmanship Summit - 2005, etc...) For returning JC's, please make sure you include leadership experiences and trainings since your last year as a JC!
    LEADERSHIP ROLES
  • List any leadership roles you have held throughout your HIGH SCHOOL YEARS (or for those in college, please include roles you have held in college). These can be in-school or out-of-school (community, religious group, etc...).
  • CAMP EXPERIENCE: Please tell us how you feel you've grown since attending camp yourself. Give specific evidence/examples of your leadership growth. Returning High School JC's: please tell us how your JC experiences have impacted your leadership experiences and life.
  • If you are currently a senior, what school/business/military branch do you intend to go to next year? For college students, tell us about your field(s) of study and what your intentions are after graduation.

APPLICATION PART 2: Video Submission

The second part of the application process is a video submission.

Each applicant must submit a video to the MASC/MAHS Office (see bottom of this page for address). Because we do not have access to various forms of media access, video submissions MUST be in standard VHS tape size (think of what fits into your VCR, remember those?!) or standard DVD format (it must play in a normal DVD player). Videos that are submitted that do not work in a standard VHS player or a standard DVD player will be disqualified. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR TAPE/DVD BEFORE SENDING IT IN! Tapes must also be rewound to the starting point of your video. Tapes/DVD's will NOT be returned.

FOR RETURNING HIGH SCHOOL JC'S ONLY:

  • Instead of a video submission, please address the following in writing:
  • What strengths do you bring to the camp staff?
  • What areas in your own leadership development would you still like to develop further?
  • Describe a memorable interaction with one of your campers from a previous year (when you were a JC). Include what the interaction was about, what your role was in this person's life at the time, and the impact you and the student had on each other.

VIDEO - PART 1: Personal Narrative

  • Start your video by clearly stating your first and last name, the school you currently attend and where you plan to go next year (if you're a senior or changing schools).
  • Describe the leadership experiences you have acquired in and out of school.
  • Explain why you want to be part of the MASC/MAHS Summer Leadership Camp, what you feel you can bring to the camp staff, your goal for the students that would be in your council, and if there was ONE thing you could change about camp, describe what that would be.

VIDEO - PART 2: Teaching/Presenting an MASC/MAHS Song

Gather a group of at least 5 people between the ages of 11-18. Choose your favorite MASC/MAHS camp song and TEACH the song to those people. We are looking at your energy, motivation, teaching style and confidence when viewing this section. Since you are teaching the song, we understand that you might need to go through it more than once. The last time you sing it with your group, imagine that you ARE a Junior Counselor at camp and the people you just taught the song to are campers!

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • Your video should be no longer than 10 minutes.
  • The standard-sized VHS tape or DVD should be clearly marked with your first and last name.
  • When you mail your video, it MUST be postmarked by the last Friday in March.
  • Include with your video a short note that includes your first and last name, current school, and that the "video enclosed is for camp consideration" (something so we know why you're sending us the video!).

APPLICATION - PART 3: LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

One letter of recommendation is required as part of the application process. This letter of recommendation must come from either a leadership adviser at your school (NHS, Student Council, Leadership Class, etc…) or one of your Senior Counselors from MASC/MAHS Camp.

RETURNING HIGH SCHOOL JC'S:
Your letter MUST come from a camp staff member (Senior Counselor or Administrative Staff Member) from the most recent year in which you were a JC.

The recommendation should be no longer than one (1) page, typed, and preferably on school/business letterhead, if possible. The letter should address your leadership strengths and growth over the past year or two (during camp, before/after camp) as well as provide support for your desire and ability to be on our staff.

The recommendation letter must be mailed in separately, directly from the recommender. Provide your adviser/senior counselor with the appropriate mailing address and/or fax number as well as the correct postmarked deadline. Letters can also be emailed to kadi@mascmahs.org

The letter should arrive in a sealed envelope, with the recommender’s signature across the envelop seal. A late recommendation letter may cause your application to be viewed negatively by the administrative staff.

The purpose of the MASC and MAHS shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character in the students of secondary schools in Michigan.
