Make it SMART

Now that the beginning of the school year has rolled around, it is the perfect time to start reflecting on your personal goals. In a leadership setting, you will often hear the term “SMART goal”, a goal intended to focus attention and resources on what is most important so that you can be successful in achieving your priorities. To start a SMART goal you must have a specific task you are hoping to accomplish over a period of time. Let’s get into what SMART stands for…

Specific: What do you want to accomplish?
Measurable: What metrics or milestones are you going to use along the way to help you accomplish your goal.
Achievable: How to accomplish this goal. Do you have the resources you need?
Relevant: Focuses on making sense with the bigger picture. How will this benefit you in the future?
Time-Bound: Set a specific date or time that you want your goal to be accomplished by.

SMART goals are beneficial because they break down long term goals into step by step feasible goals.

Bad Example: I will join greek life.
Good Example: I will join an on campus sorority at Central Michigan University by the end of my first semester of college.
